About the Destination

Tucked into the tropical edge of Yunnan Province, Xishuangbanna is a lush, vibrant region where China meets Southeast Asia. Known for its rainforests, wild elephants, and rich biodiversity, this area is also home to the Dai people, whose stilt houses, water-splashing festivals, and spiritual ties to nature add cultural depth to the experience.

The region’s landscapes include dense jungles, botanical gardens, tropical rivers, and protected nature reserves, many of which are hotspots for wildlife observation. As one of the few places in China where wild elephants still roam, conservation efforts here focus on preserving animal corridors, limiting deforestation, and involving indigenous communities in sustainable tourism. Xishuangbanna is ideal for travelers seeking warm weather, rainforest treks, and close contact with rare flora and fauna.

Day 1: Arrival in Jinghong and Cultural Orientation
Arrive in Jinghong, the main city of Xishuangbanna. Visit the Dai Minority Park, where you can explore traditional architecture and observe local crafts. Enjoy a vegetarian meal with herbs and tropical fruits native to the region.

Day 2: Tropical Botanical Garden and Canopy Walks
Travel to the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in Menglun — one of the largest in Asia. Spend the day exploring orchid gardens, palm forests, and rare medicinal plants. Walk the canopy walkway for a view over the treetops, and learn about native species threatened by climate change and habitat loss.

Day 3: Mengyang Nature Reserve and Elephant Watching
Head to the Mengyang sub-reserve of Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. Join park rangers on guided eco-trails where you might spot wild elephants, macaques, or hornbills. Observation zones allow for safe, non-intrusive wildlife viewing. End the day with a discussion on elephant conservation and forest corridor projects.

Day 4: Trekking in the Wild Jungle of Menglun Region
Trek with a local Dai guide through untouched jungle trails in the Menglun area. Identify native birds, insects, and jungle plants used in Dai medicine. Enjoy lunch in a forest clearing and visit a small eco-village involved in biodiversity monitoring programs.

Day 5: Lancang River Exploration and Village Homestay
Take a slow boat or riverside hike along the Lancang River (upper Mekong). Stop at a Dai village known for traditional weaving and bamboo building. Participate in a community cooking session and stay overnight in a homestay that supports cultural preservation and ecotourism.

Day 6: Forest Meditation and Return to Jinghong
Wrap up your journey with a short morning hike and meditation in a forest temple used by local monks. Return to Jinghong for a farewell lunch and optional visit to the Elephant Valley Eco-Center before departing.
